DIY Hair Highlights At Home
Last summer, I took the plunge and bleached my hair 100% blonde using Wella T18 toner. It was a liberating experience! However, as the seasons changed, I found myself craving a darker, more natural look. Recently, I’ve been itching to bring back those sun-kissed highlights, but this time around, I wanted to try something new – highlighting my hair at home without the need for foil or caps. With my lack of patience, I decided to take matters into my own hands and give it a go.
And that’s exactly what you’re getting – a step-by-step guide on how to highlight your hair at home without any fancy equipment. Want to learn the secrets? Keep reading to find out.
How to Highlight Hair at Home: 7 Steps to Get Blonde Highlights at Home
To achieve professional-looking blonde highlights from the comfort of your own home, follow this straightforward guide. Start by gathering the necessary tools and products, including a bleach or highlighting kit specifically designed for your hair type, 20 volume developer, and a conditioning treatment to help repair any damage caused during the process.
Buy the Right Products to Highlight Your Hair at Home
When it comes to highlighting your hair at home, having the right products is crucial before you begin the process. You’ll need to gather a few essentials, which can be found at retailers like Sally’s Beauty or Amazon. I should note that I don’t use traditional foil or caps for my DIY highlights, nor do I rely on hair dye kits – it’s simply easier this way! To get started, you’ll need the following must-have items:
1. A reliable developer, such as SalonCare’s 20 Volume Developer.
2.
Wella Toner in a shade that suits your desired highlights (I used T35 for my latest DIY job).
3. Protective gloves – I prefer SalonCare’s offerings or similar non-latex alternatives to keep your skin safe during the process.
4. A suitable bleach, such as PrismLites Blue Powder.
5. A mixing bowl of your choice (I personally like a purple-colored one for my hair color experiments).
Do a Test Prior to Bleaching or Dying Your Hair
Before attempting to achieve that coveted blonde hue, it’s essential to perform a test run on a small section of your locks. A simple strand from the back of your head will suffice. While I learned this lesson the hard way, first-time failures aside, I now confidently proceed with dyeing my hair blonde without hesitation.
Bleach Your Hair
When it comes to achieving lighter locks, bleaching your hair is often the first step. If you’re opting for highlights rather than a full-blown blonde makeover, you’ll need to start by mixing a special blend of PrismLites blue powder with SalonCare 20 volume developer. For a half-packet dose, combine one scoop of the powder with two scoops of the developer in a well-ventilated area.
Before applying the mixture to your hair, slip on some protective gloves to shield your skin from any potential irritation. Next, dip your gloved hands into the bleach solution and gently work it into the front sections of your locks. And if you’re wondering how it all comes together, I’ve got a 9-minute video that takes you through the process step-by-step – no foil or caps needed!
Wait 30 Minutes and Rinse Out With Shampoo
As you wait for the bleach to process, secure your hair into a ponytail to allow it to set evenly. For a more thorough application, consider wearing a plastic shower cap over your hair to ensure the back sections catch up with the front. If you’re only highlighting specific areas, like around your face, this step isn’t necessary. Once the 30-minute mark is reached, rinse the bleach out of your hair using a gentle shampoo in the shower.
During the waiting period, you may notice the bleach transforming your locks into an unexpected shade – don’t worry, this is a normal part of the process! For added context, I’ve included two short videos showcasing my own experience with applying and rinsing out bleach.
Apply Toner to Get Blonde Highlights at Home
When it’s time to add back color, you’ll want to reach for a toner. For my latest highlighting session, I chose the Wella T35. If you’re aiming for an ash-white hue, consider the T18 instead. Alternatively, I’ve had great success with the Wella 27 in the past. For more insight into toner colors and recommendations, consult this comprehensive guide comparing T18 and T27. To proceed, mix one part toner with two parts 20 volume developer.
As I only needed half a bottle of toner for my highlights, you may need to adjust the ratio based on your specific requirements. Once you’ve combined the ingredients in a bowl, apply the toner evenly across your entire head, focusing on the areas that received bleach. Wait 20 Minutes and Rinse Out With Conditioner
As the 20 minutes tick away, allow the toner to work its wonders. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent, extend the wait time to 30 minutes – but in my experience, 20 minutes is more than enough. Once the timer goes off, it’s back to the shower for a gentle rinse with warm water and a nourishing conditioner. Take this opportunity to treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment if you’re feeling extra pampered.
Alternatively, simply let the conditioner do its thing – either way, your hair will thank you.
Go Easy On Your Hair After Getting Blonde Highlights at Home
Following the toner rinse and conditioning treatment, your hair care routine is complete. To allow your locks to fully absorb the benefits, I suggest air-drying your hair instead of using a hair dryer. For the next couple of days, be gentle with your tresses by refraining from washing them or exposing them to chlorinated water – keep those pool sessions on hold for at least two days.
